Editing a SharePoint list item in Briefcase throws an Illegal Character

This article applies to:

7.x Briefcase for Windows

Issue:

Editing a List item throws a System.Argument Exception via mscorlib with the message "Illegal characters in path.".

Possible causes:

A List item's value in the primary column contains characters that Windows deems illegal for file names.

Resolution:

There is a difference in how Colligo handles Lists versus how Sharepoint handles Lists. In order to use offline Lists, one must refrain from using any characters that Windows deems invalid for file names.

Please avoid using the following symbols in your primary column:
  • < > : " / \ | ? *
