Credential data is encrypted and is temporarily retrieved when the credential data is used.
File data is encrypted when the device is locked and made available when unlocked. A file is unlocked when it is being viewed and locked when it is no longer being viewed. When a file in Briefcase is locked, no other application is able to access it.
